Engine Overhaul

There is only a small number of engine shops in Adelaide willing to take on vintage or classic engine overhauls. While my engine was running, it had a tick and low compression in one cylinder. Rather than repair, for enduring piece of mind I decided to take on the significant cost of a full overhaul. After asking around and initial discussions on my project, I tasked the engine overhaul to McLaren Engineering. If I could source the specific Land Rover parts needed they would do the work and supply standard engineering parts such as rings, bearings, seals etc. I hit the internet sourcing gasket kits for engine and Solex carburettor, new fuel and water pump, thermostat, oil pressure sensor and sundry other parts. The exhaust manifold was found to be cracked beyond repair. I couldn't find a Series 2 manifold, which has the exhaust exiting horizontally through the passenger side wing. Instead I settled on a series 2A manifold which exits vertically downwards. Only a true officianado would notice the difference. Series 2 water pumps are also slightly different to the 2A, and All 4x4 in Sydney, who carry a good range of Land Rover parts, would only send a reconditioned water pump once they had received my old one and assessed its suitability for rebuild.

The full overhaul included a 20 thou' rebore, new pistons and valves, crankshaft regrind and new bearings,

and a flywheel shave and balance. All new seals and gaskets and all peripherals, including starter and generator, radiator and exhaust system, were overhauled or replaced. The full overhaul cost approximately $10,000.
